September is coming soon. Is your four-year-old's pronunciation skills up to par for his/her age? An excellent rule of thumb for knowing if your child needs to work on their pronunciation skills is to figure out how easy it is for a stranger or a new person to understand what your child is saying.
If your child is 2 years old, an unfamiliar adult should be able to understand him 50% of the time. If your child is 3 years old, they should be understood 75% of the time. BY AGE 4, THEY SHOULD BE UNDERSTOOD 100% OF THE TIME.
That does not mean that they are saying every sound and word perfectly, but if you find people often asking you what your 3 or 4 year said, you may want to get a professional opinion.
Speech-Language Pathologist are trained to analyze and assess a child's speech skills and whether their pronunciation errors are age-appropriate or whether it is time to begin working on some of their difficulties.
